Seeing Lantern's calendar in another calendar app
Lantern can publish its calendar as a feed that Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Proton Calendar, Outlook, or any other calendar app can subscribe to, so the family’s events show up next to everything else on your phone or computer. A feed is read-only: add and change events in Lantern, and the other app shows them after its next refresh.
1. Make a feed in Lantern
Section titled “1. Make a feed in Lantern”- In the Lantern app, open Calendar feeds in the sidebar (on a phone, open the sidebar with the menu button first). Adults and admins can make feeds.
- Tap Make a feed, give it a name (it’s the calendar’s name in the other app), and choose Whole family or Some of us.
- Leave Include subscribed calendars off unless you need it: if one of Lantern’s calendars comes from Google and you subscribe to the feed in Google, every event would show twice.
- Leave Include notes off unless the feed’s subscribers should read them.
- Tap Make the feed. Lantern shows the feed’s link once: copy it, open it in your calendar app, or scan its code with a phone. If you lose it, open the feed and choose Get a new link (the old link stops working).
Anyone with the link can read the feed, so share it like a password. Revoke the feed stops it working everywhere.
2. Subscribe in your calendar app
Section titled “2. Subscribe in your calendar app”Apple Calendar. On an iPhone or iPad, scan the code, or open the link and confirm Subscribe. On a Mac, choose File > New Calendar Subscription, paste the link, and set Auto-refresh to how often it should check. Apple’s apps fetch the feed themselves, so your Lantern only needs to be reachable from where the device is.
Google Calendar. On a computer, open Google Calendar, then next to Other calendars choose + and From URL, paste the link, and choose Add calendar. Google’s phone apps can’t add a subscription, but they show it once it’s added. Google fetches the feed from its own servers on its own schedule, which can take hours, and only if your Lantern is reachable from the internet (see Reverse proxy and HTTPS).
Proton Calendar. On the web, open Settings > All settings > Calendars, choose Add calendar from URL under Other calendars, and paste the link. Proton says calendars from other services sync every 4 to 16 hours, and like Google it fetches from its own servers, so your Lantern must be reachable from the internet.
Other apps (Outlook, Thunderbird, Fantastical): look for “subscribe to a calendar” or “add calendar from URL”, and paste the link.
Subscribing from Apple Calendar and Google Calendar was checked by hand on 2026-10-19, with a feed from the dev instance (#172): both showed the feed’s events. Proton and the other apps follow their own documentation and haven’t been checked by hand.
What’s in a feed
Section titled “What’s in a feed”The events of Lantern’s own calendars, its holidays, and birthdays, from a year ago onwards, with their times in the right time zone and repeating events as series. A feed for some members has their events (including those keyword rules give them), their birthdays, and holidays everyone shares. Events someone hid, and calendars hidden in Settings, aren’t in any feed.
